Senator Amy Klobuchar Appointed to President's Export Council Print E-mail

Febuary 1st, 2013, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar was appointed to serve on President Obama’s Export Council. The council, which is the primary national advisory committee on international trade, assists the President with matters affecting U.S. trade, including policies and programs that promote export expansion and work to resolve trade-related issues in the business, industrial, agricultural, labor and government sectors.

“Exports are literally a world of opportunity,” said Klobuchar. “In order to compete in the global economy we need to make sure our businesses and farmers can capitalize on these opportunities and access international markets. I have long been committed to these efforts and I am honored to continue this work on the President’s Export Council.”

Klobuchar has been a leader in efforts to boost America’s ability to compete in the global economy, working to cut red tape for businesses and open up new markets to U.S. exports.

Klobuchar will serve on the Export Council alongside four other senators, five members of the House, the Secretary of Commerce and several other cabinet-members, and 28 members of the private-sector.

MSP Region Ranks 10th in Exports Print E-mail

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) announced new export data that shows the Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington metropolitan area’s merchandise exports increased by $3 billion – 12.9 percent between 2010 and 2011 – growing from $23.2 billion to $26.2 billion. This impressive growth has put the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) into a select group of 11 nationwide MSAs which exported at least $25 billion in merchandise exports last year.

"Exports are an increasingly important part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul economy as local businesses both big and small continue to look beyond our borders to increase their customer base," said Francisco Sánchez, Commerce Under Secretary for International Trade. "I have seen firsthand the power of exports for the region and the diversity of products and services that are in demand all over the world. The new data confirms the region's focus on increasing exports is already bearing fruit."

Dutch VAT Increase Print E-mail

On October 1, 2012, the Dutch VAT rate will increase from 19% to 21%.  As an incentive for foreign companies to situate their European distribution activities in the Netherlands, the Dutch government set up an attractive taxation feature called 'VAT deferment'. Under this system, VAT does not have to be paid at the moment of importation, instead it can be postponed to the periodical VAT return.  Read more here
